Bhitarkanika: the land of Estuarine Crocodiles and elusive Fishing Cat | 2N 3D




Bhitarkanika is India’s second-largest mangrove ecosystem after the Sunderbans. The National park spans through an area of 672 sq. km, is predominantly a network of creeks and canals which are inundated with waters from rivers Brahmani, Baitarani, Dhamra, and Patasala forming a unique ecosystem. Once the hunting ground of the erstwhile King of Kanika is now home to the largest congregation of the endangered Salt Water Crocodile in the country with more than 1600 individuals harboring the waters of this National park. Not only the numbers here some crocodile grows more than 20 ft in length. Other than Salt Water Crocodile, the park is home to numerous other reptiles like the Water Monitor lizard, Rock Pythons, etc.
  • Bhitarkanika Mangrove Ecosystem is the richest from the bio-diversity point of view. The floral diversity in Bhitarkanika is 2nd largest after Papua New Guinea. The Protected Area encompasses a variety of habitats and microhabitats. Mangroves serve as nesting, feeding, and breeding grounds for a wide range of invertebrates and vertebrates. Not only the reptiles, Bhitarkanika National Park shelters a good number of other amazing mammalian species like Spotted Deer, Wild Boar, Sambar, Jungle Cat, Fishing Cat, Hyena, Smooth Coated Otter etc. Bhitarkanika is one of the best places to observe and photograph elusive Fishing Cat in India.
  • Bagagahana or the heronry near Surajpore creek is another attraction of Bhitarkanika. Thousands of birds colonize the creek for nesting and the aerial acrobatics performed prior to the mating creates an ethereal sight. Other than the prized avifaunal species like Mangrove Pitta, Bhitarkanika is also home to eight varieties of Kingfishers including rarities like Brown winged Kingfisher and Ruddy Kingfisher. Apart from wildlife, Bhitarkanika offers heavenly landscapes consisting of Mangroves, rivers, and isolated beaches on sea mouth.

Day 01 | 26 December 2020: Bhadrak Railway Station - Bhitarkanika
  • After your arrival at Bhadrak Railway, you will be picked up by our team and we will drive to Bhitarkanika National Park. On arrival check into our jungle lodge located behind the Dangmal area. Post lunch we will start our first day’s activities and will go for watching and photographing all the target species. During late evening we will go out to photograph Fishing Cat and other nocturnal creatures. Dinner will be served at the lodge; Overnight stay at Bhitarkanika.
Day 02 | 27 December 2020: Bhitarkanika Jungle Safari
  • Today will be a long day full of activities. We will start very early and go out for the whole day. After morning birding around Bhitarkanika and Bagagahana, we will cruise to Hawalikhati, located on the sea mouth. This journey will make the day for landscape enthusiasts. On the way bird watching and wildlife photography. After spending considerable time at Hawalikhati Island we will cruise back again towards Dangmal. Will spend the entire evening and early night in search of Fishing Cat. Back to the lodge. Overnight stay at Bhitarkanika.
Day 03 | 28 December 2020: Bhitarkanika – Bhadrak Railway Station
  • Today also we will start very early and go out for watching and photographing birds and Estuarine Crocodiles. Back to the lodge. Post lunch transfer to Bhadrak Railway Station for onward journey. Tour ends.
